Fanart Friday – Braveheart

Some of you will know why I felt compelled to draw this, others will hopefully enjoy the fact that Braveheart was just pretty radical. My college roommate Wallace will maybe see this and remember that he and I had a Braveheart poster on our door in place of a nameplate. Ethan will probably text me tomorrow and make some joke about my uncle Argyle. These things might happen, but only one thing matters:

Fanart Friday – Thortal Kombat

I’ve been reading and watching a lot of Thor and playing a lot of Mortal Kombat, so I couldn’t decide which one to draw. So I drew them both. The god of thunder versus the god of thunder!

If anybody wants to color this, leave a comment…otherwise hopefully I’ll have time to get back to it next week.

Big thanks to Chris Samnee and Roger Langridge for making me like a superhero comic again.

Fanart Friday – Akira

I’ve recently been reading Katsuhiro Otomo’s massive epic Akira. I have to admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of the movie when I was young, mainly because the storyline is so incoherent and seemingly stitched together. That didn’t stop me from watching it a lot of times, I just always felt like I was missing some big picture. So I don’t know why it took me this long to read the manga.

I have to say, it’s a totally different beast. Characters that were relegated to tiny appearances in the film play a major role in the unfolding apocalypse. Main characters also play out very differently…especially Tetsuo and Kei. Both of them are a lot more sympathetic and interesting with thousands of pages to get to know them. Also, the APOCALYPSE…or at least the one in Neo-Tokyo…is like the last 3 books. It makes me wonder why they didn’t break the movie into two parts. The story is so much richer because of the second destruction of the city.

But I don’t want to sound entirely disparaging of an incredible film. I got the Blu-Ray version this week and it is jaw-droppingly beautiful. The smoke and liquid effects are enough alone to warrant a purchase. Good old-fashioned hand-drawn 2D animation. Awesome. So here’s a fanart:

TETSUOOOOOOOOO

Fanart Friday – Bullitt

Another week of comic updates and another week of doin some fanartz.

I never got to see Bullitt, though I’d heard all the great reviews and love thrown at it over the years, so I decided to throw it on Wednesday while I doodled for today’s post. That movie is SLOW AS HELL. There are probably 45 good minutes of hanging out in a hospital doing paperwork. Maybe that sort of thing was really exciting in the 60′s.

BUT, even with all the crazy slowness, Steve McQueen manages to be a total badass. For a film with very little actual action, he somehow still manages to be physical and tough. And of course that car chase (below). The shots done from inside the car while he races over the San Francisco hills, the long squealing drifts through crowded city streets, and the final gigantic explosion…freaking awesome.

So here you go, the scan could have been better but I’m running on like no sleep so this is what you get. I’ll do a color piece next week! Hit me up on twitter if you have something you’d like to see!
